In short

To change an image's resolution, open it above and type a new width or height — the other side follows to keep the shape — or choose a preset like 1080×1080 or 600×600. To change DPI for printing, pick 72, 150 or 300; tick Change DPI only to rewrite just the DPI value in the JPG or PNG header so not a single pixel changes. The page shows the print size in inches and centimetres, and nothing is uploaded.

Only need 300 DPI for a print shop? Tick Change DPI only — the file keeps every pixel and its exact size, give or take the 18-byte header.

How to change image resolution

  1. Open: drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC image on the tool, tap Open image, or paste it.
  2. Pixels: type a width or height (the lock keeps proportions), tap a percentage, or pick a preset. If the shape changes, choose Crop to fill, Fit or Stretch.
  3. DPI: pick 72, 96, 150 or 300, or type your own. Tick Change DPI only to keep every pixel and just update the print resolution.
  4. Download: the file name records the new size and DPI, e.g. photo-1080x1080-300dpi.jpg.

Pixels vs DPI: what "resolution" means

People use resolution for two different things. Pixel dimensions — say 4032 × 3024 — are how much detail an image actually contains, and they decide how sharp it looks on a screen and how big it can be printed. DPI (dots per inch) is only a number stored in the file that tells a printer how many of those pixels to fit into each inch. Changing DPI from 72 to 300 doesn't add detail; it just prints the same pixels smaller: 3000 pixels at 300 DPI make a 10-inch print, at 150 DPI a 20-inch one. So when a print shop or form asks for 300 DPI, check two things: the DPI value, which this page can set without re-saving the image, and enough pixels for the print size, which the inch and centimetre readout shows. Increasing pixel size smooths new pixels in between but cannot recover detail that was never captured.

How many pixels do you need to print?

Multiply the print size in inches by the DPI. 300 DPI is the usual standard for photos viewed up close; 150 DPI is fine for posters seen from a distance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change an image to 300 DPI?

Open the image, tap 300 and tick Change DPI only, then download. The pixels stay exactly the same; only the DPI value in the file changes, so it prints at the right size.

Does changing DPI change the image quality?

No. DPI is metadata. With Change DPI only ticked the file isn't re-encoded at all. Quality depends on the pixel dimensions.

How do I increase image resolution?

Type a larger width or tap 150% or 200%. The browser smooths the new pixels, which looks better than blocky enlargement, but it can't add detail the original never had.

What resolution is a passport photo?

A US passport or visa photo is 2 × 2 inches; digital uploads must be 600×600 to 1200×1200 pixels. Use the Passport preset, or our US visa photo tool for full compliance checks.

Will the aspect ratio be kept?

Yes while the lock is on. If you pick a size with a different shape, choose Crop to fill (no bars), Fit (white bars) or Stretch.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Resizing and DPI changes run in your browser.

Which formats work?

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC open; you save JPG or PNG. Change DPI only works on JPG and PNG files.
