.avif images saved from the web — any number

Converted on your device — files are never uploaded

In short

To convert AVIF to JPG, drop your .avif files into the box above and press Download. Your browser decodes each AVIF and re-encodes it as a JPG at the quality you choose, without uploading anything. Batches download as one ZIP. Transparent areas become white, because JPG has no transparency; use AVIF to PNG if you need to keep it.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Open: drag .avif files onto the box above or tap Choose files.
  2. Set quality: 92 keeps the image visually identical; lower it for smaller files.
  3. Convert: each image is decoded by your browser and saved as JPG in under a second.
  4. Download: save each JPG or press Download all for a ZIP.

Why you keep getting AVIF files

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It produces files about half the size of a JPG at the same quality, so large websites, image CDNs and online shops now send AVIF to any browser that supports it — Chrome since version 85, Firefox since 93 and Safari since 16. When you right-click and save an image from such a site, you get the .avif file the server delivered, not the JPG you expected. Your browser shows it fine, but Windows Photos needs the AV1 Video Extension, older versions of Photoshop and Office can't open it, and many upload forms only accept JPG or PNG. Converting to JPG fixes the problem in seconds. This page uses your browser's own AVIF decoder, so if the image displays in your browser it will convert here, privately and without file limits. If the image has a transparent background, convert it to PNG instead to keep the transparency.

Why local conversion is better for AVIF

AVIF files are usually small, so uploading them is quick — but it is still unnecessary. Every browser that can show an AVIF can also decode it into pixels and write those pixels out as a JPG. This page does exactly that inside your tab. Nothing is sent to a server, the result is ready instantly, and you can convert hundreds of images without hitting a limit.

  • No upload: images stay on your device.
  • Instant: no server round-trip, so most images convert in well under a second.
  • Batch: drop a whole folder's worth and download one ZIP.
  • Clean output: metadata is not copied; transparent areas become white.

Other ways to open or convert AVIF

If you prefer built-in tools, these work:

Windows

Install the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store; then Photos can open .avif files and Paint can Save as JPEG. Without the extension, Windows shows a blank thumbnail or an error.

Mac

macOS Ventura (13) and later can open AVIF in Preview. Choose File > Export and select JPEG. Older macOS versions cannot read AVIF at all.

Avoid getting AVIF in the first place

Some sites serve JPG when you open the image in a new tab and change the address (for example, removing a format parameter), but this differs on every site. Converting the file you already have is more reliable.

Quality and file size

AVIF is lossy, and so is JPG. Converting decodes the AVIF and compresses it again as JPEG. At quality 92 you won't see a difference at normal sizes. Because AVIF is far more efficient, the JPG is noticeably larger — often three to four times. That is expected and is not a sign that anything went wrong. If a form has a size limit, drag the quality slider down to 80 or 75 and check the preview.

Animated AVIF files are converted from their first frame only, since JPG cannot hold animation. HDR and wide-gamut AVIF images are converted to standard sRGB, which is what JPG viewers expect.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my downloaded image save as .avif?

The website served AVIF to save bandwidth. Your browser displays it, but when you save it you get the AVIF file, not a JPG.

Is converting AVIF to JPG safe?

Yes. This page converts in your browser and never uploads your images.

Will I lose quality?

At quality 92 the JPG looks the same as the AVIF. The file will be larger because JPG compresses less efficiently.

What happens to transparency?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with white. Use AVIF to PNG to keep transparency.

My browser can't convert an AVIF — why?

Your browser must support AVIF: Chrome 85+, Edge 121+, Firefox 93+ or Safari 16+. Update the browser or try another one.

Can I convert many AVIF files at once?

Yes, add as many as you like and press Download all for a single ZIP.
