How to convert AVIF to PNG
- Open: drag .avif files onto the box above or tap Choose files.
- Convert: your browser decodes each AVIF and writes a lossless PNG — transparency included.
- Check: transparent areas show as a checkerboard in the preview.
- Download: save single files or press Download all for a ZIP.
AVIF to PNG keeps what JPG can't
AVIF supports transparency, wide colour and very efficient compression, which is why websites use it for product cut-outs, logos and stickers as well as photos. When you need that image in another app, PNG is the safest target: it is lossless, keeps the alpha channel (transparency), and opens in every editor, slide tool and operating system. JPG would replace the transparent background with a solid colour and add another round of lossy compression. The cost of PNG is size — a photo can be ten times larger than the AVIF — but for graphics with flat colours and transparent areas the PNG is often reasonably small. This page uses the AVIF decoder already built into your browser, so if the image shows in a tab, it will convert here. Your files are processed locally and never uploaded, which also means there is no daily limit or queue.
Why convert locally
Design assets and product photos are often unreleased or client work. Uploading them to a third-party converter can breach an NDA even if the service deletes files later. Converting in your own browser avoids that question entirely: the image data never leaves your machine.
- Transparency preserved pixel-for-pixel.
- No upload, no sign-up, no watermark.
- Batch conversion with a single ZIP download.
- Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, iPhone and Android.
Built-in alternatives
You can also convert AVIF to PNG with tools you may already have.
Mac
On macOS 13 Ventura or newer, open the AVIF in Preview and use File > Export, choosing PNG. Transparency is kept.
Windows
Install the free AV1 Video Extension, then open the image in Paint and Save as PNG. Note that classic Paint flattens transparency to white; Paint in Windows 11 keeps it only if the layers feature is used.
Image editors
Recent versions of GIMP, Krita and Photoshop (with the AVIF plug-in or a recent release) can open AVIF and export PNG, but that is a lot of software for a one-step conversion.

Frequently asked questions
Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?
Yes. The alpha channel is decoded and written to the PNG unchanged, so transparent backgrounds stay transparent.
Is the PNG lossless?
Yes. The PNG stores exactly the pixels decoded from the AVIF. It can't restore detail the AVIF's compression already removed.
Why is my PNG larger than the AVIF?
AVIF is one of the most efficient formats available; PNG is lossless. Photos can grow ten-fold, while flat graphics grow much less.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser on your device.
Which browsers can convert AVIF?
Any browser that displays AVIF: Chrome 85+, Edge 121+, Firefox 93+ and Safari 16+.
Can I convert animated AVIF?
Only the first frame is converted, because PNG (unlike APNG) holds a single image.
