How to change the speed of a GIF
- Choose, drop or paste one or more GIFs.
- Pick Speed × and drag or tap a chip (2× is twice as fast, 0.5× half speed). Or choose Frame delay or Total length.
- Set the loop — forever, once or a number of times — and tick Reverse or Boomerang if you want.
- Compare the two GIFs playing, then Download GIF or all as a ZIP.
How GIF speed works
A GIF doesn't have a frame rate. Each frame carries its own delay, stored in hundredths of a second, and the viewer waits that long before showing the next frame. To change the speed, this tool finds every delay in the file and divides it by the speed you choose: at 2× a 10-hundredths delay becomes 5. Nothing else in the file is touched — not the colours, not the compressed pixel data — so the result is lossless and almost exactly the same size. There's one catch: browsers treat delays below 2 hundredths (20 ms) as 10 hundredths, which makes over-sped GIFs suddenly slow, so delays are never set below 20 ms. “Frame delay” gives every frame the same time instead, and “Total length” works out the speed that makes one loop last the seconds you set. The loop count lives in a small header block that is rewritten or added. Reverse and Boomerang reorder whole frames, so those rebuild the GIF with a full 256-colour palette.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Price | Free — no watermark |
| Sign-up | Not needed |
| Upload | None — done in your browser |
| Speed | 0.1× to 5×, chips for 0.25×, 0.5×, 0.75×, 1.25×, 1.5×, 2×, 3×, 4× |
| Other timing | Same delay for every frame (20–1000 ms), or a total loop length (0.5–30 s) |
| Lossless | Yes for speed, delay, length and loop changes — pixels and size unchanged |
| Loop | Forever, once, or 2 / 3 / 5 / 10 times |
| Extras | Reverse, Boomerang (forward then back) |
| Batch | Yes — ZIP download |
| Fastest delay | 20 ms per frame — faster GIFs are slowed down by browsers |
Speed, delay and frames per second
| Frame delay | Frames per second | Feels like |
|---|---|---|
| 20 ms | 50 fps | The fastest a browser will play |
| 40 ms | 25 fps | Smooth video |
| 50 ms | 20 fps | Smooth screen recording |
| 100 ms | 10 fps | Typical GIF, slightly choppy |
| 200 ms | 5 fps | Slideshow / step-by-step |
| 500 ms | 2 fps | Slow flip-book |
If a GIF with only a few frames looks choppy when slowed down, it isn't the tool — there are no in-between frames to show. Slowing a GIF can't add frames.

Frequently asked questions
How do I speed up a GIF?
Choose the GIF, keep “Speed ×” and tap 2× (or drag the slider), then Download GIF. Only the frame delays change, so the quality is identical.
How do I slow down a GIF?
Pick 0.5× for half speed or 0.25× for a quarter. Slowing can't add frames, so very short GIFs may look choppier.
Does changing the speed reduce quality?
No. Speed, frame delay, total length and loop changes only rewrite the timing numbers inside the file. Every pixel stays exactly the same.
Why doesn't my GIF get faster above a certain speed?
Browsers treat any frame delay under 20 ms as 100 ms. The tool stops at 20 ms so the GIF never ends up slower. To go faster still, drop frames with the GIF compressor.
Can I make a GIF exactly 3 seconds long?
Yes. Choose “Total length” and set 3 s; the delays are scaled so one loop lasts 3 seconds.
Can I make a GIF play only once?
Yes. Set Loop to “Play once”, or to 2, 3, 5 or 10 times.
How do I reverse a GIF or make a boomerang?
Tick Reverse to play it backwards, or Boomerang to play forward and then back. Both rebuild the GIF with full colours.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. It's processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
Can I change the speed of many GIFs at once?
Yes — drop them all and download them as a ZIP.
